Heading into the Great Northwest: Brookings, Oregon

Your mom and I finally made our way back across the northern California border into Oregon. Always on the look out for a new place to spend the next chapter of our lives, we considered beautiful Southern Oregon because there's a prison I could transfer to work at not far from the very northern edge of California. The area was as beautiful as everyone's ever said...

It was a long drive up across the border, about eight hours altogether, and we left late in the afternoon, so we knew it'd be a long haul. But between listening to Harry Potter audio books and chatting it up together, we made a seemingly quick trip out of it. Before we knew it, we were winding around Southern Oregon on our way to our first stop, Crescent City, which is actually just inside California.
Crescent City is a very sleepy town without much going on, but the morning was beautiful. Fog was rolling in and making for a peculiar and serene setting around the harbor.
We found the most distinct looking rocks laying about everywhere and collected some souvenirs.
The town had actually been quite devastated by a tsunami a few decades ago, leaving it quite a bit slower and quieter than it may have been back then. Still, the ambience was gorgeous.
We had breakfast in Crescent City and made our way to the bed and breakfast in Brookings, the southernmost town in Oregon we decided to visit. This was the evening view from the balcony of our room. Needless to say, the place offered a brilliant overlook.
And this was the view the next morning. Fog eventually shrouded the entire thing as the weekend progressed.
The B&B was quirky as could be. The common room was packed full of jukeboxes and old diner memorabilia. In our bathroom was this uniquely captivating portrait of a very concerned looking sea captain. We fell in love with the scruffy guy.
The path to the beach from the B&B was right out of a storybook. The morning dew steamed off the planks as the sun warmed it up.
And this is how the place looked from the outside from the beach. It was quite large, but we were the only ones there that weekend. The owner closed it for the season right after we left.
Every time : )
The town of Brookings was charming, but of course we were more enamored with the nearby beaches. This beautiful, reflective beach right below the B&B offered a nice venue for a stroll.
Your mom got artsy with the camera. I love this picture!
We had a fun night out in Brookings, eating sushi and then enjoying a nightcap at a cool pub which ended up hopping with all the middle-aged partyers in the town. The whole town seemed to be a bit ahead of us in age, making for a quiet but somewhat lonely feeling place without crossing paths with anyone in our demographic. The next morning we headed to Chetco Point to overlook the cove.
We explored some of the neighborhoods and found some charming, perfectly sized homes right up our alley and pretty affordable, too. This cute cat said hello and played a bit before scampering off.
We spent our last evening lounging at the B&B, enjoying the setting sun and the refreshing evening air. It was quite pleasant, and a nice trip to prepare for the busy holidays on the way. We all but ruled out the idea of actually moving up there, but it was well worth the visit.
