Your mom and I have never attended Picnic Day, so when we learned that some friends from out of town would be here to ring it in, we decided to finally see what it was all about. I guess it's evolved from something of a welcome day for new UC Davis students to more of a huge block-party across the entire town type of affair.
| Your mom's great friend Kelley was our guide. She graduated from UC Davis and knew her way around. |
| The campus is really a sight to behold. Some old relic buildings, some new architectural marvels. |
| The crowds were starting to grow all throughout the campus and the town. It was easy to see those who were probably having a bit too much fun, if you know what I mean. |
| Our hearts broke a little bit when we learned we had just missed by a minute the last race of the annual Dachsie Derby, a championship Dachshund race hosted here every year. Damn! |
| But I was able to catch a glimpse of the champion weenie. |
| Street performers and musicians were everywhere mingled amongst the large crowds downtown |
| We had quite the crew assembled. On my immediate right was Matt and our friend through him, Troy, who was up visiting Matt from Fresno. Coincidentally, more friends from Fresno, Colby and Amanda, were on their way to Portland for a vacation and they stopped in Davis to visit. |
| Important conversations being had, of course. |
| In the Arboretum was held the annual Battle of the Bands, a playoff between UC Davis' and other nearby universities' marching bands. They were getting crazy! |
| Each band would play a song and try to win the most applause, sometimes wandering out into the crowd or putting on dance numbers to earn some additional crowd favor. |
| It turned out our first picnic day was the 100th since its inception. What a way to ring in Spring! |
